This book describes the application of mathematical and fundamental theory as stated in the relevant standards, namely EYM and NDS. Timber is one of the important building materials in the field of engineering, other than concrete and steel. However, there is still a lot of unexplored knowledge about timber, including how timber connections are made. One of the main types of timber connection is mortise and tenon. Mortise and tenon are widely seen as one of the most important traditional timber structural joint. In order to understand the load-carrying capacity and performance of the structural mortise and tenon joint, the existing theoretical background of timber joint design is made as a reference. Current equations applicable in estimating the load-carrying capacity of timber joint uses the European Yield Model (EYM). Therefore, the main aim of this book is to share the basic design knowledge, inclusive of safety factor limitations (as engineering main factor) in structural design.
Dr. Rohana Hassan is a scientist at the Institute for Infrastructure Engineering and Sustainable Management (IIESM), College of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). She is also the founder of Engineered Wood Products Research Group (EWPro) at UiTM. Her research focuses primarily on structural engineering and timber engineering products for sustainable green technologies targeting the development of timber as alternatives and green material. She has authored more than 70 publications including peer-reviewed journals and 10 book chapters. Internationally, she has led and organized more than 10 international conferences and has technically reviewed more than 100 technical papers.
Dr. Azmi Ibrahim received Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering at UiTM (then ITM). He went on to do M. Phil. at University of Sussex in 1990, directly converted to D.Phil. in 1991. He obtained Doctorate in Civil Engineering from University of Sussex in February 1995. Has been continuously serving UiTM until now and was given responsibility to hold various academic administration posts. He has been involved with research and consultancy activities collaboratively, as principal investigator and member, for national and international grants amounting to RM10 million, producing more than 80 indexed publications.Dr. Zakiah Ahmad is Dean of Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Mara. She is specializing in timber engineered composite and nano-polymer composites. Up to this date, she has secured and leads more than 50 numbers of research grants and consultancies worth more than RM 20 million. She has published more than 300 papers in journals and proceedings as well as 8 books. She has received several gold and silver awards on her research projects at national and international research competitions. She is the recipient of Top Research Scientist Malaysia and Standard Malaysia Award.
