Trama

This encyclopedic reference takes into account the status of interventional neuroradiology in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. It explains and discusses the various options to recanalize occluded extra-and intracranial vessels. The book provides an in-depth description of the different endovascular treatment strategies, including thrombectomy for large vessel inclusion, balloon angioplasty and intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis, and stenting of extra- and intracranial arterial dissections and their conservative treatment, and bypass surgery for subacute and chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. The book also offers tips and tricks for each procedure to enable readers to understand better the benefits and limitations of the endovascular management of ischemic stroke patients. Similarly, it explains the technical aspects of the procedures with their respective pros and cons.
Written by respected experts in the field, the book will be a valuable resource for interventional neuroradiologists and neurologists, vascular and endovascular neurosurgeons, stroke neurologists, and other practitioners at all levels of experience.

Autore

Hans Henkes studied Medicine and Psychology at the Freie Universität Berlin from 1977 to 1985. After his residency in neurophysiology, radiology, and neuroradiology at the Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Saarland in Homburg/Saar, he received board certifications in radiology and neuroradiology in 1991 and 1992. From 1991 to 2006, he worked under Professor Dietmar Kühne at the Alfried Krupp Krankenhaus in Essen, Germany, where he received extensive training in interventional neuroradiology and was the senior consultant for neuroradiology beginning in 2000. From 2004 to 2006, he was also the head of radiology and neuroradiology at the Robert Janker Klinik in Bonn, Germany. He received his habilitation in neuroradiology (venia legendi) in 1999 from the University of Duisburg-Essen under Professor Michael Forsting, and in 2006, he was appointed as an extraordinary professor there. Since 2007, he has been the medical director of the Neuroradiological Clinic at the Klinikum Stuttgart, Germany. He has published more than 500 book chapters and journal papers with an h-index of 58 and over 12,000 citations. He is named as a co-inventor in over 70 patents. In March 2008, he was the first to successfully perform endovascular treatment on an acute occlusion of a large cerebral vessel using a self-expanding stent, which he had participated in developing seven years earlier. This breakthrough has since fundamentally improved the methodology and results of acute ischemic stroke management. In recognition of this achievement, he received the CIRSE Award of Excellence and Innovation in Interventional Radiology (2017) and the Alfred- Breit-Preis (2023) from the German Röntgen Society, as well as honorary doctorates from the Universities of Dnipro (Ukraine), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Budapest (Hungary).

José E. Cohen studied Medicine at the National University of Rosario, Argentina, graduating summa cum laude in 1990. He completed his residency in Neurosurgery in 1997 at the Clement Alvarez Medical Center in Rosario, with training rotations in vascular surgery and radiosurgery in the USA, Israel, and Canada during his residency years. After a year in the Department of Neurosurgery at Hospital de Pediatria Garrahan in Buenos Aires, he completed a 3-year fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery with Professor Pedro Lylyk at the Equipo de Neurocirugia Endovascular y Neuroradiologia Intervencionista (ENERI) in Buenos Aires and then joined ENERI as a senior neurosurgeon. He was appointed Director of Endovascular Neurosurgery and Interventional Neuroradiology at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Centers, Jerusalem, Israel in 2002, and Full Professor of Neurosurgery at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Faculty of Medicine in 2019. Professor Cohen has participated in many multicenter clinical studies, co-authored 150 book chapters and over 350 articles in leading peerreviewed journals, and served on editorial boards and/or as a reviewer for more than 50 medical journals. He is an active participant in professional societies, meetings, and congresses in Europe, Russia, South America, and Israel. During 2018, he was honored by the Israeli Ministry of Immigration and Integration with its highest award in recognition of his significant contributions to Israeli society. In 2023, Professor Cohen was recognized by the Hadassah Medical Organization for his outstanding professional and academic achievements, and more recently, by the Israel Neurosurgery Society for his leadership in endovascular neurosurgery.
