Inspired by the September 1996 conference POINTS OF CONTACT: PERFORMANCE, TOURISM AND IDENTITY at the Centre for Performance Research, this issue explores the relationships between tourism and performance. Topics include: the tourist as spectator; the tourist site as theater; identity explorations in contemporary performance; theatricalization of everyday life; semiotics of visiting, travel and sightseeing; preservation and production, folklore, folkarts and the invention of tradition. Among the contributors to this issue are Rustom Bharucha, Guillermo Gomez Pena, Coco Fusco and Barbara Kirschenblatt-Gimblett.
