Trama

This book adds remarkable advances in microwave chemistry, methods, equipment, and practical examples since the first edition was published in 2018. Moreover, practical examples of the use of microwave energy have been upgraded. It also includes how to easily predict microwave heating using material constants. In addition, coupling analysis simulation with electromagnetic fields and heat transfer which greatly support researchers' experiments is covered.

The principal aim of this book hasn’t changed: to introduce chemists through a tutorial approach to the use of microwaves by examining several experiments of microwave chemistry and materials processing. It subsequently enables chemists to fashion their own experiments in microwave chemistry or materials processing. This book helps chemists who take an interest in the use of microwave radiation to overcome difficulties to understand the nature of electromagnetism, microwave engineering, and thermodynamics.

Autore

Prof. Satoshi Horikoshi

Satoshi Horikoshi received his PhD degree in 1999, and was subsequently a postdoctoral researcher at the Frontier Research Center for the Global Environment Science (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) until 2006. He joined Sophia University as Assistant Professor in 2006, and then moved to Tokyo University of Science as Associate Professor in 2008, after which he returned to Sophia University as Associate Professor in 2011. Currently he is President of the Japan Society of Electromagnetic Wave Energy Applications (JEMEA), and is on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Microwave Power and Electromagnetic Energy and other international 3 journals. His research interests involve new functional material or nanomaterial synthesis, catalytic reaction, food science, biology, formation of sustainable energy, environmental protection using microwave- and/or photo-energy. He has co-authored over 220 scientific publications and has contributed to and edited or co-edited 39 books.

Prof. M. Catalá-Civera

José M. Catalá-Civera (M’04–SM’15) received the Dipl. Ing. and Ph.D. degrees from the Universitad Politècnica de València, Valencia, in 1993 and 2000, respectively. Since 1996, he has been with the Communications Department, Universitad Politècnica de València, where he received a Readership in 2000 and became Full Professor in 2011. Since 2016, he is Director of the Research Institute ITACA, and co-Head of its Microwave Division. His current research interests include the design and application of microwave theory and applications, the use of microwaves for electromagnetic heating, microwave cavities and resonators, measurement of dielectric and magnetic properties of materials, and development of microwave sensors for nondestructive testing. He has co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles in refereed journals and conference proceedings and received research funding from various sources including awards from the European Union programs (EU), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and industry contracts. He is also a holder of 24 national and international patents. He is often called to be a reviewer of several international journals, is an IEEE Senior Member and participates in several international professional and scientific associations. He was General Chair of the 2019 International Conference on Microwave and High Frequency Heating organized by the Association of Microwave Power in Europe for Research and Education (AMPERE), a European-based organization devoted to the promotion of RF and microwave energy.

Prof. Robert F. Schiffmann

It is with great sadness to inform the readership that Bob Schiffmann (M.Sc., Purdue University) passed on October 2021 at age 86. During his lifetime, he conducted R&D on microwave heating (1961-2021); was an independent consultant (1971-2021), and focused exclusively on microwave-heating projects (1982-2021). His work included applications research into microwave ovens, microwave foods & packaging, industrial microwave systems, medical applications, and more. He was President of R.F. Schiffmann Associates Inc., President of the International Microwave Power Institute (IMPI) (16 years), a Founding Member of AMPERE (the European Microwave Society), an Honorary Member of the Microwave Technology Association of the UK, and a Scientific Lecturer on microwave topics at the Institute of Food Technologists (5 years), as well as a Certified Food Scientist, and not least a visiting professor at Kunming University of Science & Technology (China) .He was the first recipient of the Metaxas Microwave Pioneer Award. He taught numerous International Microwave Science & Technology courses since 1973 and chaired over 20 International Microwave Conferences, published some 50 articles and held 28 US patents related to Microwave Science & Technology. He also served as an expert & expert witness in 35 microwave-related cases

Asst. Prof. Jun Fukushima

Jun Fukushima received his Ph.D. degree in 2012 (Nagoya University, Japan), and was subsequently an Assistant Professor at Tohoku University (Department of Applied Chemistry). His research interests involve novel solid-state materials synthesis, microstructure and diffusion control by microwave processing, and the physics of microwave effects. He has co-authored over 50 scientific publications and books.

Assoc. Prof. Tomohiko Mitani

Tomohiko Mitani received the B.E. degree in electrical and electronic engineering, the M.E. degree in informatics, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, in 1999, 2001, and 2006, respectively. In 2003, he was an Assistant Professor with the Radio Science Center for Space and Atmosphere, Kyoto University, and since 201
