His main areas of research are operations management, lean management, JIT and innovation.

Matias is a Full Professor at the Department of Economics, Management, Industrial Engineering and Tourism of the University of Aveiro (UA), being also the Coordinator of Industrial Engineering and Management Research Area and Director of the PhD program in Industrial Engineering and Management. He is a researcher at the C-Mast-UBI Research Unit and at the GOVCOPP-UA Research Unit. His main research area is in general industrial engineering and management and management systems and energy and sustainability in particular.
