This English edition helps students and nursing professionals give each patient their unique position in healthcare delivery. The book provides tools to connect key topics and innovations in healthcare, developing a complete perspective on patient/person-centred care. It  provides a comprehensive picture of important and recent insights on health and care. At its core, nurses provide care with a focus on the patient as a person. This person-centred care engages each patient's needs, preferences and expectations when providing integrated care.

In this volume, care starts from the patient's point of view rather than from the role and function of the healthcare professional. Dr Barbara Sassen is currently senior lecturer and post-doctoral researcher at the University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Health Care, The Neterlands. She received her PhD from Maastricht University in the Netherlands in 2011, entitled 'Supporting healthcare professionals to encourage patients to reduce cardiovascular risk attributable to physical inactivity'. This PhD research involved an intervention strategy for the implementation of health promotion and self-management in professional practice by nurses and paramedics. She studied health sciences, health promotion and health education at Maastricht University. She also followed the Master courses of the Master Educational Sciences at Utrecht University. Before this, she completed a Bachelor in Nursing with professional experience as a nurse in mental health and ambulatory home care.

Her focus and interest is on integrating prevention through health promotion and health education in person-centred care. This involves the proper implementation of prevention, health education and health promotion, disease prevention and providing self-management support and lifestyle coaching by healthcare professionals. To properly implement prevention in healthcare, it is important that healthcare professionals take a professional view of person-centred care and the importance of shared-decision making, and take leadership in promoting health in the care-setting. That is why this book was written!
