The Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp will host a magnificent showcase of art in its Reunion - From Quinten Metsijs to Peter Paul Rubens exhibition, which runs from June 5th until November 15th.
Placed under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Paola, the event promises art lovers a wealth of extraordinary paintings and creations from some of the most talented painters to have ever lived. The Bishopric of Antwerp was founded in 1559, and in honour of this event, the Church of Our Lady was re-baptised the Cathedral of Our Lady 450 years ago, an anniversary that will be celebrated with this fabulous exhibition. During its 450 years of existence, the Antwerp cathedral became a real treasure chamber of religious art, painted and sculpted by renowned masters. Until the French revolution the works of art decorated the columns, chapels and walls of the cathedral. In the aftermath of this turnover a lot altarpieces found a shelter in museums. The Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine Arts was one of them. Now these works will be exhibited in the cathedral again, at their original places.
