This book focuses on the development of research in mathematics education cultures and its products from the perspective of local educators. It consists of contributions from Mainland China, Indonesia, Korea, Macao, Singapore, the Philippines, and Turkey. This book examines the development of the culture of research in the respective countries and also reviews the research conducted in the recent past in mathematics education. It takes a critical stance through identifying the various accomplishments, and identifying challenges for the future of research in terms of its diversification and quality. Divided into two sections, the first section considers factors around the development of a research culture in the respective countries by focusing on the means used to develop research expertise and quality. The second section consists of overviews of the area of research and methodologies conducted in mathematics education in the various countries, with the intention of highlighting theresearch topics conducted as well as discussing omissions of such research.

Bill Atweh is an educational consultant with more than 30 years of experience in academic positions at the Queensland University of Technology and Curtin University of Technology in Australia; more recently, as a visiting scholar at the Philippines Normal University, University of South Africa, Malmo University, and De La Salle University in the Philippines; and is currently an affiliate professor at Ateneo Manila University De Manila, Philippines. He is the co-editor of several books in mathematics education and numerous conference and journal articles, and has supervised students at master’s and doctoral levels.
Lianghuo Fan is a distinguished professor at the School of Mathematical Sciences and the director of the Asian Centre for Mathematics Education at East China Normal University, Shanghai, China. He is also an emeritus professor at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom(UK). Prior to this, he was a professor (a personal chair) in Education, and the director of the Mathematics, Science, and Health Education Research Centre at Southampton Education School, University of Southampton, from 2010 to 2018. Professor Fan holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, United States of America (USA), and has extensive experience in teaching and research in China, USA, Singapore, and the UK. He was the chief editor of The Mathematics Educator (2006-2010) and is the founding editor-in-chief of Asian Journal for Mathematics Education, as well as the chief editor of Frontiers in Education (STEM Education). Professor Fan is currently a vice president and the secretary general of the Chinese Society of Mathematics Education, and has published numerous journal articles and books.Catherine P. Vistro-Yu is a professor and the program coordinator for Mathematics Education at the Mathematics Department, School of Science and Engineering, of the Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines. She served in the Executive Committee (EC) of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) for a four-year term from 2013 to 2016. She was a member of the International Programme Committee of the 14th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-14) held in Shanghai in 2021.
