Illustrator Yonekichi Makino (1900-1987) possessed a marvellous power of observation which he employed to create a vast number of finely detailed drawings of living creatures. This volume is a collection of illustrations of mammals, birds, insects, spiders, amphibians, reptiles, fish and other aquatic creatures that Makino produced for the Kojien dictionary, the Japonica encyclopaedia and Fabre Konchu-ki.
