Matera racchiude in sé ottomila anni della storia dell'Uomo che, senza soluzione di continuità, ha lasciato la sua impronta scolpita nei villaggi neolitici, le chiese rupestri, i Sassi, le abitazioni scavate nella calcarenite. Anche nel suo territorio l'Uomo ha percorso la storia degli ultimi mille anni, costruendo castelli e borghi medioevali sulle colline argillose. Il tutto in un'antica atmosfera di magia che i due artisti, Nicola D'Imperio e Giorgio Pica, hanno percepito con la loro sensibilità ed espresso l'uno con la pittura e l'altro con la fotografia.
